P90X Workout Review

P90X, or Power 90 Extreme, came out more than 15 years ago. Its infomercials, which featured Tony Horton’s voice echoing through a dark fitness studio at 3 a.m., were all over the airwaves.

P90X Workout Review

This clunky 12-DVD set is now neatly put together in the online module for Beachbody On Demand. And when COVID-19 destroyed the country and closed gyms, P90X suddenly became popular again.

Yes, you heard right: Baby, P90X is back!

Now it’s our turn to sort through this 90-day circuit program to find out three things: if you can get ripped in 90 days, if you can handle working out 6+ days a week, and if you can build a lot of strength and torch fat.

Let’s find out!

What is P90X?

P90X is a Beachbody On Demand program that first came out in 2005 as a set of 12 DVDs. “Get in the best shape of your life” seems to be the unofficial catchphrase, which sets the tone for the road ahead.

Warning: it’s not for people who are easily scared.

In fact, Horton says you should choose a less intense program, like his 10-Minute Trainer, if you have trouble meeting the minimum Fit Test requirements or if you already have health problems.

This 90-day, six-day-a-week program has 12 different workouts that last between 45 and 60 minutes, with the exception of the Ab Ripper X, which only takes 16 minutes (short = easy).

If you read our review of P90X2, you’ll find that it works in a very similar way.

With this advanced routine, the goals are to work up a sweat, get more flexible, avoid plateaus, and lose weight (possibly 40+ pounds).

Before you ask how hard a workout plan from 2005 can be, here’s what you can expect:

  1. Training blocks are broken up into three parts so that progress can be made more quickly: adaptive, mastery, recovery, and repeat.
  2. A diet that won’t make you feel sick and will help you build muscle and lose fat.
  3. Twelve unique workouts (everything from chest & back and Yoga X to core synergists and cardio X)
  4. Constant references to the Beachbody and P90X product lines (legend has it that if you say “Shakeology” three times in a row, Tony Horton will appear and serve you a smoothie)

To get “ripped,” you have to be able to push through the pain, catch your breath during hour-long workouts, and work out for 6-7 hours a week.

P90X Details & Features

P90X is a wild ride for fitness fans who want to lose weight and build well-defined muscles with a lot of blood flow. You shouldn’t buy it on a whim unless you’re already in shape.

Read on if you’re not sure if you should spend the next 90 days with Tony Horton.

The Module Layout

The Beachbody module sets a high standard for any online fitness platform that wants to start routines. It’s easy to use, simple to get around, and works with both your desktop browser and your phone.

When you type P90X into the Beachbody On Demand search bar, you’ll have everything you need at your fingertips (at least for the next 90 or so days).

There is a 1:12 trailer that shows what the trip will be like.

On the home page, you can also find:

  • How many workouts there are, how long they last, and what skill level is best (22, 45–60, and “advanced,” if you’re curious)
  • The P90X philosophy is shown in a Tony Horton video called “How to Bring It.”
  • A link to the Nutrition Center that gives you two options: 2B Mindset and the Ultimate Portion Fix
  • Information about Tony Horton, including how to find him on social media
  • Success stories that are convincing

There are three tabs: Start here, Workouts, and Program Materials. We just talked about the Start here tab. Let’s get into the meat and bones of P90X, which has been around for decades.

“Workouts”

You can find all 22 P90X workouts under the Workouts tab. There are 12 P90X workouts, 5 P90X Plus videos, and 11 P90X PRO Team clips in the collection, which doesn’t add up to 22.

This part isn’t very well put together. We’re not sure where the number 22 came from, and the PRO Team clips skip from round 16 to 21, with some split into two workouts.

Math is hard.

“Plus” seems to be an option if you’re a sadist and want an even more intense P90X workout. But it’s not clear whether you swap these workouts in occasionally or if it’s a brand new program.

What a P90X Workout Is Like

Similar to what we said in our Insanity workout review, even the easiest P90X workouts will leave you drenched in sweat, gasping for air, and begging for a break for your muscles.

P90X has been around since the early 2000s. We only bring that up because it’s a blast from the past: the video is a bit pixelated, and, no surprise, there are a lot of microphone headsets.

This is what Horton means by a “world-class workout”:

  • A light calisthenics warm-up for about two minutes (caution: Horton is already out of breath about a minute into the warm-up).
  • Six minutes of both moving and standing stretches
  • Between two rounds and 12 sets (in other words, circuit training)
  • Horton gives form tips for almost every exercise and sometimes talks about how to change an exercise (ex: resistance band pull-downs or chair chin-ups instead of standard)
  • Water breaks every now and then, which you’ll pray for after the first few sets.
  • There is a lot of talking between Horton and his support staff. He even talks directly to the camera, which could make it feel like an in-person group fitness class.

Horton says in each video that it’s up to you to make this program work for you. Change the exercises, take longer breaks, and lower the weight as you see fit. Just make sure to finish the set strong.

All 12 workouts are different, of course.

When you get to Ab Ripper X or Yoga X, the above list might not be right at all. For example, on ab day, you do 11 moves with 25 reps each, all in 16 minutes.

Types of Exercises

When it comes to exercise, you can do anything.

In fact, the program has hundreds of exercises, so you’re bound to find at least a few that you’ve never done before.

You might see exercises like:

  • Decline push-ups
  • Swing kicks
  • Warrior two
  • Calf-raise squats
  • Groucho walks
  • Jab/cross/hook
  • Camels
  • Towel hoppers

If regular gym workouts with 5-8 exercises per session are boring or too short, the 20 or so exercises in each hour-long P90X workout will certainly catch your interest.

Reps and seconds per exercise are all over the place, which adds a mysterious and exciting touch to every workout (unless you memorize all 12 programs).

HOW THE P90X PROGRAM WORKS

The P90x program is hard and has a lot of different exercises. In addition to those already mentioned, the plan includes a lot of stretching, plyometrics, yoga, cardio, and strength training.

Because of how the workout works, the package comes with a calendar for scheduling, a detailed fitness plan, the nutrition guide I mentioned above, and DVDs that show how the techniques and methods are used.

The models in the DVDs not only show how to do the moves, but they also do it in different ways so that beginners can understand it better.

You have to pass the fitness test before you can start the real program. This feature is a must-have, and you have to do it. If you do well on the test, you are ready for the real thing.

FAQs About P90X Prices

FAQs About P90X Prices

The full package of P90X costs about $119.85. The package comes with 12 DVDs, a workout calendar, a diet plan with food suggestions, and other materials.
It takes a lot of sweat and hard work, but it’s worth it in the end. When you read reviews of P90X, you can see amazing success stories and “before and after” pictures. Free to Try: For a limited time, you can stream P90X for 30 days without paying anything.
Both programs have 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon, but Insanity is better for people who want a high-impact cardio workout and want to lose weight. P90X is better for people who are already in shape and want to build muscle.

The Final Verdict Of P90X

Yes, it does. But the system that is producing the results isn’t anything that stands out. It’s based on the fact that you will stick to the workout plan, eat right, and give your muscles new ways to work out.
